A journey into China's modernization path

The province of Shandong boasts a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Offering a captivating blend of breathtaking coastal landscapes, including the cities of Weihai and Qingdao, alongside the city of Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, where ancient history intertwines harmoniously with modernity. It is a treasure trove that seamlessly merges the past with the present.In continuation of the "Insight into China" initiative, the Graduate Youth League Committee of Tsinghua University warmly welcomed a group of 20 Chinese and international students on a transformative journey through this vibrant province. United under the theme of "Chinese and foreign youth explore Chinese-style modernization together," the students embarked on an adventure that unveiled the province's dynamic enterprises and cultural treasures.

Over four days, the students embarked on a journey that broadened their knowledge of China's modernization path, merging local and international perspectives into a unified narrative. The expedition commenced in Weihai, where Tsinghua students accompanied by the students of Harbin Institute of Technology visited the Weihai Industrial Innovation Exhibition Centre.

Immersed in the city's urban and industrial landscapes, they discovered Weihai's nurturing environment for innovation. Guided by staff members from the institute, the group explored Weihai's eight prominent industrial clusters and industrial chains, gaining profound insights into the growth trajectory of local enterprises. The students also had the opportunity to witness key products from the region's businesses across diverse industries.

Continuing their expedition, the students arrived in Qingdao, a city renowned for its lively atmosphere and globally recognized port.

The visit to the bustling Qingdao Port served as a testament to China's economic dynamism and thriving international trade and commerce. Serving as a crucial gateway, the port exemplifies the nation's commitment to global connectivity and economic integration. With its advanced infrastructure, streamlined operations, and strategic position, the Qingdao Port plays a pivotal role in China's Belt and Road Initiative. This project resonated deeply with the visiting international students hailing from member countries, as they witnessed firsthand the port's significance in shaping a shared future. After immersing themselves in the port's vibrant atmosphere, the students proceeded to the Qingdao Haier Industrial Park, a significant destination that encapsulates Haier's technological advancements and corporate legacy. This field trip offered a unique opportunity for the students to trace Haier's journey as a leader in the science and technology sector, making for a truly enriching and educating experience.

Venturing further, the students explored the Hair Smart Home Appliance Park, a convergence of technology and everyday living. This immersive experience provided them with an insight into the modern future of home life, where artificial intelligence takes the lead and shapes our living spaces. Through interactive demonstrations in simulated home environments, the group experienced firsthand how these cutting-edge technologies seamlessly integrate into our daily lives, embracing everyday efficiency and comfort.

Next on their itinerary was a visit to the Zero Carbon Community Energy Exhibition Hall, nestled within the prominent Olympic Sailing Center. This eye-opening experience shed light on sustainable energy strategies as the students witnessed a rich showcase of green energy technologies. The exhibition offered a glimpse into how renewable energy sources can harmoniously integrate into communities, protecting our environment and paving the way towards a sustainable future.

Integration was also a central theme for the final leg of the journey in Qufu city, the revered birthplace of Confucius.

Here, the youth witnessed the harmonious fusion of traditional wisdom with modernization. As they embarked on a captivating exploration, the participants visited significant cultural heritage sites, including the famous Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, and Confucius Forest, as well as the enlightening Confucius Museum. The journey continued as they ventured to the Nishan Sacred Land, where they experienced an impressive light and firework show against the backdrop of the world's largest Confucius statue. Accompanied by knowledgeable local guides, they delved deeper into the profound teachings of Confucian thought surrounded by the mountains of Shandong province, immersing themselves in a world where traditional wisdom seamlessly intertwined with modern aspirations.

Finally, on the last day of the journey, the students traveled into the countryside of Sishui.

Here, they visited the Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Center, where they met with local vendors and encountered the diversity of local businesses and products contributing to the unique development of the region. This experience offered a glimpse into the efforts of rural revitalization and the significance of preserving local traditions and craftsmanship.

As part of the rejuvenated "Insight into China" program series, this expedition through Shandong province allowed the students to witness China's past, observe its present, and anticipate the future trends shaping the nation's development. Through in-depth exchanges between Chinese and international students, cross-cultural understanding was enhanced, fostering a sense of unity and encouraging further educational exchanges.

The students' reflections echoed the impact of this transformative experience.

Ren Xiaochen, a Master's student at the Schwartzman College of Tsinghua University and leader of the group, noted the importance of in-depth exchanges between Chinese and international students in enhancing China's international image.

Wang Ziming, a Ph.D. student from Tsinghua University's School of Finance, remarked, "A phrase that struck me during the visit was 'let the classics live, let life become classic.' In just two days in Qufu, I felt the tangible impact of Confucian classic culture. I believe the ability to transcend time and space is the source of the enduring and renewed Chinese civilization."

Nick, a Ph.D. student from the Electronic Engineering department of Tsinghua University, hailing from the United States, expressed his honor at studying at the birthplace of Confucius. He emphasized the relevance of Confucius's thoughts in today's world, remarking, "I find it hard to imagine that, over 2500 years later, the works of this teacher still have such a profound influence. This trip allowed me to understand more about Confucius's thought and its relationship with modern Chinese culture and social governance."

This journey through Shandong province served as a testament to China's remarkable blend of ancient wisdom and modernization. The students' immersive experiences in Weihai, Qingdao, and Qufu offered an opportunity to explore China's progress and have a deeper understanding of its rich cultural heritage. The "Insight into China" program continues to empower students, both Chinese and international, to be ambassadors of cultural exchange and agents of change in shaping a harmonious and interconnected world.
