Synopsis

A theory of feature specification (also called underspecification) offers a precise way to specify the phonemes in a language. In this talk, I will consider four versions of feature specification, which are different in the numbers of features, specified values and alternative solutions. Based on the comparison and discussion of them, I shall propose a new approach that preserves a few shared assumptions while minimizing the number of alternative solutions.
